Warnings: Season 8 Spoilers/Character Death
They were all in shock. Only 24 hours before they were all laughing enjoying a meal together relieved that the latest drama was over, but really it was just beginning. They wouldn’t be allowed to investigate Warrick’s murder. They shouldn’t have been allowed to help investigate the murder that he was being framed for but they got away with it. Shock is probably why none of them argued when they were told they couldn’t be involved in any part of the investigation.
Greg sat in the break room and watched how everyone was dealing with being told that their coworker and friend had been shot. They were told to go home, that swing & days would cover their next two shifts to allow time to mourn their friend and colleague. There was silence for a long time before Grissom cleared his throat and said that he would arrange for the city’s counselor to be available to anyone who wanted to talk. With that he left for his office hoping he could get their and call Sarah before he started crying.
Nick stood up so fast his chair fell over. With tears streaming down his face he left. He had a girlfriend and a family that would help him through yet another tragedy.
That left Greg and Catherine in the break room. Although not close friends, he still felt the shock and sadness of knowing he would never work with Warrick again. As Greg was about to get up and leave he realized that Catherine had not moved since they had been told about Warrick’s death. Her face was blank as she sat motionless staring at nothing. Greg knew she would probably feel the loss more than the rest of them. Although they never got together there had always been something between her and Warrick. They teased and flirted, always dancing just out of each others reach like they were waiting for the right song that would bring them together. But now that moment would never come. Greg knew Catherine’s life hadn’t always been easy, though few people seemed to have it easy now a day. He knew that Lindsey, being a teenager, was getting more and more difficult to deal with. Her mom was still mourning the loss of Sam Braun. Greg wondered what to do. He really wasn’t the person people turned to for support and help at times like this. Hell people really didn’t turn to him at any time. He wasn’t sure if she would accept it but he couldn’t just leave her here alone. He got up and went over to her. “Cath…Come on. Let’s get you home.” She snapped out of her haze and just looked up at him. Her eyes glazed her face still blank.
He reached out and took her hand. With a slight tug she stood and followed him out of the room and towards the door. Greg wondered if he should take her car or his but after looking at her again he realized she wouldn’t be going anywhere for a while so he led her towards his car. He opened the passenger side door for her and waited for her to get in. She looked at him again with no emotion showing on her face before she slid into the car. He closed the door and went around to his side. “Put on your seatbelt Catherine” he said as he started the car. She didn’t move so he reached over and fastened it for her.
As Greg drove towards Catherine’s house he wondered how long it would be before she broke. He knew it would happen, it was just a matter of when and how bad it would be. He wanted to be there to help her through but didn’t know if she would accept that. Didn’t know if she would be comfortable enough with him to let him see her grieve. But he also knew that everyone else she would lean on was also grieving in their own ways. As he approached her house he decided that all he could so was stay and try to help. Maybe helping her would help him get over his feelings of loss and sadness of loosing someone they all loved.
